A Q&A with Matthew Williams

Baritone, John’s Boys Male Voice Choir

This month, we caught up with Matthew Williams, one of the choir’s talented baritones, to hear about his journey with John’s Boys. From memorable performances to life behind the scenes, Matthew shares his experiences, favourite moments and what it really means to be part of our choir family.

What do you remember most about the very first Johns’ Boys concert?

It was the Noson Lawen at the Stiwt in Rhos to remember the two Johns. It was a fantastic night, and back then we thought it was just a one-off concert. 😆

What were rehearsals like in the early days?

Fun, exciting and full of energy.

Did you ever imagine where the choir would be ten years on?

No, we were just enjoying singing together and didn’t expect anything more. I am really proud of all the amazing and unthinkable feats we have achieved as a choir over the last 10 years.

What has being part of Johns’ Boys meant to you personally?

As the choir has grown and I have met so many great people, some of whom I now call my other family. They have been a constant support throughout some difficult times in the last few years. It’s great to know there is always support there when I need it most, and to be able to help them in return when needed too.

Is there one performance or concert that stands out for you?

Obviously, it has to be BGT. There are lots of fab memories from all the rehearsals and while taking part in the shows. It was great to be part of a programme I grew up watching!

Do you have a favourite song or arrangement you’ve sung with the choir?

And Can It Be and Bread of Heaven have to be shared top favourites for me.

How has the repertoire changed or evolved over the years?

Challenging at times, but always fun.

How do you think the choir has evolved since those early days?

We have steadily grown to become one big extended family. You can go to anyone for anything, and when I listen to our music, I am proud of the sound we create together.

What are you most proud of when you look back?

Definitely being the first and only Welsh male voice choir to win Côr y Byd. It was a fantastic experience and definitely a moment I will never forget.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining the choir now?

Definitely come along and join us. We always have a great time, both in rehearsals and on concert nights, and we get to sing in some of the best venues in the UK and abroad. Even if you’ve never been in a male voice choir before, don’t be afraid to come along and try something new.
