This month, Johns’ Boys returned to the studio to continue recording new music for future releases. It was a busy and exciting few day as the choir once again had the privilege of working alongside world-renowned producer Jon Cohen.
Whilst audiences often experience the finished performance on stage, studio recording brings a completely different set of challenges for the choir.
Every detail is exposed under the microphone, requiring intense concentration, precision and patience throughout long recording sessions.
Over recent projects, the choir has continued learning the art of studio recording — developing not only musically, but also in understanding the discipline, control and emotional detail needed to bring recorded music to life in a very different way from live performance.
The sessions were filled with hard work, creativity and plenty of memorable moments, with several of the new recordings already becoming firm favourites amongst the choir.
Tom Garston Reflects on the Recording Sessions
What surprised you most about the recording process?
“What surprised me most was how much detail goes into every little section of recording. It also surprised me how much fun it was being part of something I’d never experienced before.”
How different was recording in the studio compared to performing live on stage?
“When you’re live on stage, you’re completely in the moment, whereas in the studio you’re focusing on being much more precise and refined to achieve the best result possible. It was a fantastic experience.”
What was the biggest challenge during the recording sessions?
“The biggest challenge was keeping focused and concentrated throughout the long recording sessions. But working together as a team made it much easier, and it ended up being a really enjoyable experience.”
