Name: Ross Burgon
How long have you been a member of Johns’ Boys?
Since November 2024.
What inspired you to join the choir?
After moving to Wales with my family, I was keen to get back into choral singing and find that sense of musical community again.
Do you have any musical background or experience before joining?
I sang a lot in my teens and early twenties, but there was quite a gap—25 years between my last concert in 1999 and my first with Johns’ Boys in 2024!
What’s your favourite song to perform with the choir and why?
Cwm Rhondda (Bread of Heaven) – it’s such a powerful and emotional piece. The arrangement we sing is stunning and every time we perform it, it clears the mind and lifts the soul.
What has been the most memorable performance or event for you?
Our St David’s Day concert in Swansea really stood out. Singing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau with 900 passionate Welsh voices singing back in four-part harmony was a spine-tingling moment. Absolutely unforgettable.
How would you describe the camaraderie within the choir?
From day one, I’ve been welcomed with open arms. The laughs, the friendships, and the mix of ages and talents all contribute to a sound—and a spirit—that’s truly special. Post-concert socials aren’t bad either!
What’s the biggest challenge of being in a choir like Johns’ Boys?
Definitely learning the Welsh repertoire! Growing up in Scotland, many of the songs and the language are completely new to me. But the support is always there when I need it.
Do you have a pre-performance ritual or superstition?
Nothing yet—I might need to come up with one!
If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Right now, I’m really looking forward to our first concert in Scotland at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall. I can’t wait to share this music with friends and family from back home.
What are you most excited about for the choir’s future?
Everything! I’m excited to see where we’ll be performing next and what exciting new repertoire Aled has in store for us.
How has being part of Johns’ Boys impacted you personally?
Returning to regular singing has been brilliant for both my mental and physical health. Performing can be a real workout—but the buzz and joy it brings is unmatched.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining a choir?
You’ll be amazed by how much fun it is. Don’t overthink it—just go for it and enjoy every moment.
