Choir Spotlight

Name: Ioan O’Neill

How long have you been a member of Johns’ Boys?

Since 2019.

What inspired you to join the choir?

Watching Johns’ Boys win Choir of the World at the 2019 Llangollen International Eisteddfod. The sheer joy and pride on their faces was infectious. It made me realise how powerful music can be – I knew I wanted to be part of something that brings people together and creates those unforgettable moments.

Do you have any musical background or experience before joining?

Yes, I’ve sung with several choirs including Only Boys Aloud and the National Youth Choir of Wales. I also studied Music at GCSE and A-level, so I had a solid foundation in both performance and theory before joining.

What’s your favourite song to perform with the choir and why?

Nothing Like a Dame. It’s such a fun, theatrical piece that gets everyone into character. The shift in energy is immediate – you see it on our faces and in the audience’s reactions. It’s pure joy.

What has been the most memorable performance or event for you?

The Canadian Tour was an unforgettable adventure, but one performance that really stands out was at the Stiwt in Rhos in 2025. It felt like a true homecoming. Being back where it all began made it incredibly special and reminded me just how far the choir has come.

How would you describe the camaraderie within the choir?

It’s something really special. For such a big group, we’re incredibly close – like one big, slightly chaotic family. There are endless inside jokes and stories (many probably best left untold!), and I’ve made friendships that will last a lifetime.

What’s the biggest challenge of being in a choir like Johns’ Boys?

Every member plays a vital role in the overall sound. So if someone’s missing, it can really affect the balance. That’s why commitment is so important – it helps us deliver the best performance every time.

Do you have a pre-performance ritual or superstition?

Nothing too serious – unless you count a pint beforehand as a ritual! A bit of Dutch courage never hurts and definitely lifts the mood.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

The Royal Albert Hall – properly this time! We’ve been there before with Viggo Venn, but I’d love for us to have the chance to really showcase what we do in that iconic venue.

What are you most excited about for the choir’s future?

The unknown! Whether it’s another international tour or something totally unexpected, it feels like we’re just getting started. I’m excited to see where the journey takes us next.

How has being part of Johns’ Boys impacted you personally?

It’s changed my life. I’ve grown in confidence both as a performer and as a person. I’ve made lifelong friends and been part of something truly special. It’s so much more than just singing – it’s about people, connection, and the memories we’ve made together.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining a choir?

Do it – you won’t regret it. Even if you’re unsure or nervous, give it a go. It’s not just about music; it’s about community, confidence, and making memories you’ll never forget.
