Choir Spotlight

Name: Aron Cook

How long have you been a member of Johns’ Boys?

Since 2019 (6 years)

What inspired you to join the choir?

I have always enjoyed coral singing but while speaking to Gareth Jam (having previously sang with him in other choirs), he encouraged me to reach out to Aled and join.

Do you have any musical background or experience before joining?

Yes, I have done A-level music as well as singing with choirs and as a soloist in the eisteddfod.

What’s your favourite song to perform with the choir and why?

I have two song for different reasons.

  1. Biblical – this is because of the amazing response from the audience that this song gets as its what we are known for following BGT.
  2. Surge Illuminare – is my personal favourite due to the musicality and the fun surrounding the song.
What has been the most memorable performance or event for you?

My most memorable performance would have to be singing in the BGT semi-finals followed by the response and support the choir received.

How would you describe the camaraderie within the choir?

To me, there’s something special about a group of men singing together: the vulnerability it takes to open up vocally creates a strong emotional bond.

Humour, friendly teasing, and support tend to flow naturally within Johns’ Boys. Whether it’s warming up before a concert, sharing a pint after rehearsal, or rallying around someone going through a tough time, we have become a tight-knit community where each member feels they belong.

What’s the biggest challenge of being in a choir like Johns’ Boys?

For me the biggest challenge is juggling work, family life with two young children and the pleasure of singing with such an amazing choir.

Do you have a pre-performance ritual or superstition?

For me its wearing colourful socks. They are hidden but there is always a burst of colour.

In our audition for BGT I wore bright pink socks and even when wearing our formal dress (tux) I am wearing a bright pair of socks.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

For me I would love to perform Dalhalla amphitheatre-due do its acoustics and the way it was created.

What are you most excited about for the choir’s future?

I’m excited to see what is next for the choir and where the next chapter will take us.

How has being part of Johns’ Boys impacted you personally?

I have created friend for life and it has reignited my passion and love for choral singing and music.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining a choir?

I would encourage everyone to join a choir.

Ultimately, joining a choir is a beautiful way to express yourself, relieve stress, and be part of something bigger. Go for it—you might just find it becomes one of the most joyful parts of your life.
