Choir Spotlight

Name: Andrew Williams

How long have you been a member of Johns’ Boys?

Joined 2019, had a break late 2021 until 2024.

What inspired you to join the choir?

Always been musical and was in church choir as a youth. I really enjoy singing and wanted to join other like minded singers who I could learn and develop from.

Do you have any musical background or experience before joining?

Not much! Grade 1 piano, church choir.

What’s your favourite song to perform with the choir and why?

Possibly Nothing Like a Dame. It’s fun and yet still has some good notes/range.

What has been the most memorable performance or event for you?

Enjoyed my short solo at Christmas, but probably the concert in Bristol. The acoustics and audience were incredible. I have also really enjoyed the television performances for S4C, BBC Wales and ITV.

How would you describe the camaraderie within the choir?

Fun and professional. We have a good laugh and are there for each other, but at the same time appreciate each other’s talents.

What’s the biggest challenge of being in a choir like Johns’ Boys?

Learning the rep especially as don’t read music

Do you have a pre-performance ritual or superstition?

No, although I do like a vocal zone before stage.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Gutted to be missing York Minster. Anywhere in the world would be somewhere more exotic, but meaningful. So excited to be singing in Canada. I prefer venues where it’s musically sound possibly with character and meaning. Not really bothered about larger arenas etc.

What are you most excited about for the choir’s future?

The journey. Where we’re going and being an involved participant in it.

How has being part of Johns’ Boys impacted you personally?

Provides me with a second family. People to share with and sing with. I see singing as most therapeutic and singing with talented others is so rewarding. I learn from them and feel honoured to sing alongside them.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining a choir?

Do it. Be prepared for hard work and commitment, but go for it.
